TERENGGANU OPEN UP GAP AT THE TOP GOING INTO FINAL DAY

KRUBONG (18 June 2010) - Terengganu opened up a four gold medal gap over their nearest challenger Wilayah Persekutuan at the top of the medal standings going into the final day of the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 tomorrow.

Following from yesterday’s neck to neck race which saw the east coast side surging ahead with the two gold medals won through athletics to pip Wilayah to the top with 42 gold medals at the end of the day, Terengganu were once again in form on the penultimate day of the Sukan Malaysia - easing to another five gold medals.

They won two golds through judo - Norsafrina Rahman in the women’s below 63kg division and also Muhd Shaiful Arif in the men’s below 81kg - one through lawn bowls (Fateha Asmidar in the women’s singles) and another two gold medals from boxing (Wan Mohd Rizuan in the men’s 57kg division).

And then of course, the all-important gold medal from football as they beat Selangor with a solitary 1-0 win for them to make sure a hat-trick of titles from the event beginning from 2006 in Kedah and then in 2008 in Terengganu.

With the five gold medals today, Terengganu have picked up a total of 47 gold medals, 29 silver and 41 bronzes Wilayah are on second with 43 golds, 42 silver and 49 bronzes while third is Selangor with 42 golds, 42 silver and 56 bronzes. Hosts Melaka are placed eighth with 31 gold medals, 29 silver and 28 bronzes.

With Wilayah picking up only three gold medals on the day through silambam (M. Mohanah in the women’s 56kg-65kg) and also Wan Siti Haniza in the women’s ring as well as the men’s hockey following their close 1-0 win over hosts Melaka tonight, any hopes of overtaking Terengganu will depend on tomorrow.

From winning just four yesterday, Negeri Sembilan won the most number of gold medals today with a haul of 11 alongside 5 silver and one bronze.

Negeri Sembilan were dominant in the silambam with four gold medals to their name through M. Silambarasi (women’s 30kg-35kg), S. Tarampreet (women’s 36kg-40kg), M. Komathy (women’s 51kg-55kg) and also C. Gobirajan (men’s 66kg-75kg). Boxing gave them two gold medals with wins in the 45kg division (Mohd Fuad Mohd Redzuan) and also the 48kg division (S. Jaya Raman), another two from badminton in the men’s singles (Mohd Arif Latif) and the women’s doubles (Ng Hui Ern and Ng Hui Kin).

The remainder of Negeri Sembilan’s gold medals came from weightlifting (Rahimi Rahim in the men’s snatch below 105kg), petanque (Amirul Anuar in men’s shooting) and lawn bowls (Shahrul Azri- Mohd Herman Shah in the men’s pairs).

But the 11 gold medal win failed to bring Negeri Sembilan into the top half of the standings where they had to be content with their ninth position currently - from 29 gold medals, 26 silver and 40 bronzes.

There will be only six gold medals on offer on the final day of the Sukan Malaysia XIII and whether it will affect the overall standings will only be known at the end of the day tomorrow.
